Currie, a young officer with a distinguished fighting record, advanced with his troop dismounted across a long stretch of exposed ground, and against severe punishment, against another little redoubt. When the light horsemen were about eighty yards from the position, the enemy raised the white flag; but, as Currie and his men moved forward to take the surrender, the Turks re-opened fire at close range. Currie and all his men except two fell wounded, Currie mortally. Nevertheless Sergeant Patrick Kelly with two men, one of them wounded, went on and seized the redoubt with thirty-three prisoners.' (Gullett p720).

Killed in the attack on the Turkish-held Balkan Gun Pits, Anzac, 28th June 1915: 'The 5th Regiment moved along Harris Ridge as far as the Balkan Gun Pits, where they were subjected to heavy machine gun and rifle fire from the Echelon trenches, and also from Gaba Tepe. They were also subjected to shell fire from one of our destroyers, the commander of which had not been informed that our men were operating outside our own lines.... The Regiment's casualties during the afternoon were heavy, amounting to 23 killed and 79 wounded.' (Wilson p19). Name commemorated on the Mackay, Queensland, memorial.

Notes: Wounded in wrist (Australia's Fighting Sons of the Empire) Wounded in the attack on the Turkish-held Balkan Gun Pits, Anzac, 28th June 1915: 'The 5th Regiment moved along Harris Ridge as far as the Balkan Gun Pits, where they were subjected to heavy machine gun and rifle fire from the Echelon trenches, and also from Gaba Tepe. They were also subjected to shell fire from one of our destroyers, the commander of which had not been informed that our men were operating outside our own lines....
