Despite 16 years of research, no photo is known to exist of 2nd Lieutenant McLeod.

Father; Charles Henry McLeod. Mother; Mary McLeod (nee Sutton). Wife born in Adelaide, SA. Married 1906 [cert. no. 7303], Victoria. Daughter; Felicia McLeod, born 1909 [cert. no. 30118], Victoria.

Enlisted 17 Aug 1915 as Corporal. Promoted Sergeant 16 Dec 1914. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant 28 Apr 1915. (CARO letter).

'In Scottish Regiment at outbreak of war. Physical drill instructor in Ballarat & in military camp before going to Egypt.' Related to 'Lieutenant Morris [sic] McLeod of Ballarat killed day of landing 25th April 1915, 7th Battalion (cousins).' (AWM 131 Informant widow, 4 Stone Street North Brighton - annotated 'address no good 1923'. Other NOK given as Father and sister, C.H. McLeod & May McLeod. 11 Flinders Street, Thornbury, Victoria).

Sergeants McLeod and Meager rescued a detachment of marines trapped in battle outposts, which were completely covered by Turkish fire, in Wire Gully during the night of May 1st. (Bean V1 p liii, lv, lvi, 541) (See Lieut. MEAGER's record).

Killed in 2nd Battle of Krithia, advancing at Kanli Dere with the 5th Battalion:
'Lieut. H.T. Elder, its signalling officer, who since the Landing had acted, practically single-handed, as the staff of the battalion, was killed while advancing, as were Lieuts. J.D. Newham, V.L. Saltau, and W.H. McLeod, all newly-promoted from sergeant's rank. Lieut. C.B. Hamilton was mortally hit as he went forward.' (Bean Vol. 2 p35n).
