Next Of Kin: Father; George Home. Mother; Elizabeth Geddis Home, of Newmill-on-Teviot, by Hawick, Scotland.

Despite 16 years of research, no photo is known to exist of 2nd Lieutenant Home.
Should anyone have information on where we might find one, we would be most grateful.

Came to Australia at age 27. Also trained as 'A Gamekeeper'. 'Served 7 years in 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Britain, attained rank of Sergt.' Referee for more information given as: 'Mr Mills, Plumber & Gasfitter, Coonamble NSW.' (AWM 131 Informant father).

Enlisted as a private, 18 August 1914, sworn in 21 Aug. Promoted Colour Sergeant, F Coy., 19 Oct 1914. Appointed C.S.M. C Coy 1 Jan 1915. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant 1 May 1915.
Incorrectly named as 'T. Howe' in promotion list, Commonwealth Gazette 75 of 1915.

'Lieutenant James Home, the Scotch constable, is dead (writes J.M. Rees, in the 'Dubbo Liberal'). Mr. Home was for about six months, a very able, if strict officer stationed at Coonamble, after doing about 12 years in a crack Scottish regiment. He served through the South African War with great credit. He joined this time as soon as war was declared - as a private - and died at the Dardanelles as a commissioned Lieutenant. All honour to his memory. The late Constable Home was also stationed at Dubbo, and followed Constable Walsh, of Orange, when he was transferred.' (Orange Leader 3 Jun 1915 p4).

St. Barnabas [CE] Church Coonamble, NSW [Sunday morning, 4 June 1915]:
'The mayor, Ald. J.T. Young, unveiled a memorial tablet containing the names of Private Proctor, Second Lieutenant Home, and Lance-Corporal Nail.' (Orange Leader 8 Jun 1915 p4).

Wounded 3rd May 1915, gunshot wound to left leg. Died of wounds in 17th General Hospital Alexandria, 13th May 1915, buried same day by Chaplain A.V.C. Hordern.

Father was trying to locate a watch Lieutenant Home had received as a present when he left Scotland. (Letter from George Home to Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, dated 3 June 1915).
