'The enemy attacked all three posts - employing over 1000 men - under cover of heavy and accurate shell fire. Lieut. King, M.C. put up a most heroic defence, but was overwhelmed greatly by superior numbers. He was killed and every man of his troop either killed or wounded. Lieutenant Henderson also put up a gallant performance. He was wounded and his troop reduced to three men, but with these he held the Bluff against great odds, till the counter attck relieved him.' (Bourne p76). Name commemorated on the Brisbane, Queensland, memorial.

Notes: Taken prisoner in the attack on the Turkish-held Balkan Gun Pits, Anzac, 28th June 1915: 'The 5th Regiment moved along Harris Ridge as far as the Balkan Gun Pits, where they were subjected to heavy machine gun and rifle fire from the Echelon trenches, and also from Gaba Tepe. They were also subjected to shell fire from one of our destroyers, the commander of which had not been informed that our men were operating outside our own lines.... The Regiment's casualties during the afternoon were heavy, amounting to 23 killed and 79 wounded.' (Wilson p19). 'The prisoner, Sgt. M.G. Delpratt... had been sent by Col. Harris with an urgent message bidding Midgley to retire, but missed the troops, whom Midgley had already withdrawn, and on reaching the Balkan Pits found them empty. He was there seen by the Australian machine-gunners, who mistook him for one of the enemy, and by their fire cut off his retreat. While he was in this position two Turks and a German sergeant crept to the pit from the other direction and captured him. (Bean V2 p299n). For a more detailed account of the operation and diagrams, see Bean V2 p295-9. Bean (V2 p299) states that 24 were killed in the operation, 79 - including 5 officers - wounded.
